After receiving heartfelt feedback from last week’s article, I was compelled to pivot away from my plans for this week. As a I reflected on the power of gratitude and how gratitude can boost wellbeing - by shifting our focus from what we don’t have to what we do – I began to think of those who don’t have as many choices as I do in life.
Be it comforts or conveniences, most of us in this contemporary setting have options galore at our fingertips.
But what of those who don’t have a lot? Who don’t have multiple options at their disposal? How do they handle crisis, a health scare or otherwise? For those who are seemingly alone?
On cue, I received the Malawi Children’s Mission newsletter from Karen Hirsh, Director MCM, which was a timely reminder that even in our most difficult challenges, there are others who have it harder than I do.
For the orphans and vulnerable children of Malawi, Africa, life is full of incredible challenges and hardships. When a child is parentless, their choices are diminished. Add to that poverty, and one can understand why hope is a rare luxury for the orphaned child.
These precious children are truly the “don’t haves”. Yet, they somehow grasp the power of gratitude.
As I read the newsletter, I was once again captivated by how these children display such a unique hope. These young lives are not full of “things” – which means that when they receive much needed food, shelter, clothing, medicine and an education, their hope springs forth.
More importantly, the children of MCM gravitate towards the care shown by their supporters. Real gratitude emerges when you know someone is interested in your well-being, in your best interests. I’ve witnessed it with my own eyes.
So, as I continue on my own wellness journey, I hope to encourage those who have weathered the storm of a difficult life trial: you can help spread your own gratitude by supporting those who are not as fortunate.
In this vast global community, we must hold ourselves accountable to each other. To care for those less fortunate, wherever we may be.
Please consider supporting a child in Malawi. Not only would it change a life, but it will change you as well.
Thank you all again for your well wishes and gracious support towards me! I am truly honored and grateful.
